I create PDF documents from MS Word by printing directly to Distiller. However before the FINAL PDF stage I print my hardcopy off on my regular Lexmark printer. Obviously when I do this there is often a formatting shift because of the fact that I am selecting to print my hardcopy using my Lexmark printer. My prepress printers said that I should avoid using my Lexmark driver and should install a Postscript printer with a Distiller PPD. This way my hardcopy would be exactly as my PDF. We have hundreds of MS Word documents and cannot afford to check page flow before the distilling process. Is this a good way around or a bad idea?

Word documents will always reflow when you change printer driver; you cannot stop it, because Word is designed that way. You should really not be using Word if page reflow is a problem. However, one strategy to avoid this is to ALWAYS make a PDF from your Word documents, NEVER print direct from Word. Then the flow is consistent. Keep the Distiller driver permanently selected as the default, and reflow should not usually much occur. Aandi Inston
