PS Level 2 Emulation printer vs PS printer

I have a Lexmark printer to which I have always printed off all my postscript files/PDF files. It has PS Level 2 Emulation.
I am now creating files in Word and formatting them with the Adobe PS printer and Agfa PPD. I've been told that I should be using a true PS printer. Is this the case, I haven't had any problems. What advantages do I have with swapping over?
Thanks

First of all, assuming that you are running under Windows'9x/Me and actually using the AdobePS driver, not the Windows 2000/XP driver installed by Adobe's installation program, you are violating the End User License Agreement for that driver unless you are using it with an Adobe application program.

Secondly, PostScript is device dependent. That is what the PPD is all about. Using a PPD for an Agfa printer with your Lexmark may cause problems such as not giving you access to all your printer's features (such as various paper sizes, trays, etc.) and likewise may give you supposed access to features that your printer cannot deliver on.

Finally, with regard to PostScript emulation, if you haven't had any problems, fine and dandy! Mazel Tov! I don't think that anyone in their right mind (including those of us who work for Adobe) would tell you to throw out your printer simply because it doesn't have what you describe as true PS (we assume that you mean an implementation using Adobe PostScript licensed from Adobe). On the other hand, many of the emulations have suffered from problems in processing complex PostScript files generated from graphically-complex PDF files or PDF files generated by more recent versions of advanced applications such as InDesign. Some providers of emulations do provide no-cost fixes for the bugs in their emulations. Others don't. Printers and RIPs with Adobe PostScript are backed by Adobe Systems Incorporated; the others are not.
