Postscript file cannot spool up to size in Win2K?

I've been running into a few problems with clients running Windows 2000 for quite a while now when it comes to printing to large format printers (HP 755CM & HP 3800CP). When it came to large jobs hitting around 200mb+ postscript files (varied between users), they would get errors all the time. These errors occured for the standard HP Postscript driver for the DesignJet 755CM, the HP driver for the Fiery X2 attached to the DesignJet 3800CP, and now even for the PosterJet driver for their RIP engine (replaced the Fiery). These errors happen from almost any product that can print to these drivers (Photoshop, Geomedia).
However, my Windows XP setup on my client prints flawlessly to these same devices. I finally found some time to test some setups in a controlled setting:

Program: Adobe PhotoShop 6.0
File: 259 mb .psd file (24" x 20" @ 400 ppi)
Printing to PosterJet RIP for HP DJ3000/3800 CP - (able to preview the RIP)

My machine:
Dell Precision 530 / 1.4 Ghz P4 Zeon / 512 RDRAM
WinXP with all critical updates/SP1 installed
pagefile max size set to 1.2 GB
scratch disk on different partition with 4GB free

Postscript file size printing to PosterJet - 605mb, no errors printing through network

Test Box (try #1):
Dell Optiplex GX260 / 2.8 Ghz P4 / 1024 DDRRAM
Win 2000 with all critical updates/SP3 installed
pagefile max size set to 2.5 GB
scratch disk with 20GB free space

Postscript file size printing to PosterJet - 180mb, will not RIP

Test Box (try #2):
Same hardware as above, but changed to WinXP with all critical updates and SP1 installed

Postscript file size printing to PosterJet:
  - 605mb, no errors when printing to a local install of PosterJet Printer but get errors when printing through network even though it spools up to size.

I then installed Office XP without any updates:
  - 605mb, no errors printing through network

I've seen similar posts in the Photoshop forum with people with Win2K having issues...I don't think it's a driver issue, but more of an OS issue.

Has anyone else encountered/duplicate this?

This sounds like a problem that I had encountered under Windows 2000. It is not a driver bug, but rather a bug in the spooling subsystem used by all drivers.

The good news is that this problem can be worked around by turning off spooling which is also the bad news. Printing directly to a device without spooling does tie up both the device and the application program.

The spooling subsystem bug is/was that it was not calculating the remaining disk space left on large NTFS-formatted disk volumes. Typically I would see this problem occur when my spool file would reach a somewhere between 300 and 500 megabytes in size. This didn't happen for disk volumes formatted as FAT-32.

We reported the problem to Microsoft quite a while back. However, I personally haven't seen the bug rear its hoary head in a very long time. I just assumed that one or more of the services packs (either 2 or 3) fixed the bug. Upon reading your post, I did attempt to choke the horse with a monster file on the queue. Couldn't get it to fail anymore with my systems running Windows 2000 SP3 with all Microsoft updates.

This is a long shot, but assuming that you have all Microsoft's critical and recommended updates applied for Windows 2000, you should try applying the Multiple Master patch described at <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?13@@.1de5b45b>. It has some system updates that may possibly include the fix to this problem. Let us know if it helps.

We are having simlar problems with Photoshop 7.0 / win2k and an HP 5000PS. The HPGL Drivers work fine, the Postcript driver crashes on anything over 150mb. the system works flawless w/NT 4.0 and Photoshop 7.0 I could use any advice...
Thanks!

The thing is, it's not just a Photoshop problem here. It's from any program (Geomedia for example) that can print large amounts of data to a postscript driver for a large-format plotter/RIP engine. That's usually when the postscript size usually jumps up into the problematic category.

And just as Dov stated before, I also believe that it's a bug with the spooling subsystem instead of the drivers since it happens to any of the drivers.

I was actually able to test out some more Dov, but to no avail...nothing seems to work for me. I've tried the following so far at this point:
  - loaded patch posted on w2k/NTFS/all critical/SP3
  - reformatted, NTFS, no patches
  - reformatted, FAT32, no patches
  - loaded all critical/SP3
  - loaded patch posted

So at this point, I'm about to reload WinXP from scratch to see if it's going to work again (it should).

At this point, unless someone can bring to light a possible explanation/fix for this, I'm going to have to do some XP installs...

At this point, I think it might be prudent for you to contact Microsoft directly.
