Automate .xls to .pdf OR .xls to .ps to .pdf

I have a directory with numerous .xls files which need to be converted to the same file name, except .pdf, on a weekly basis. Yes, I can do this manually with Acrobat Distiller but it is so time consuming to handle all files individually. Acrobat has "Watch Folder" which converts all .ps files to .pdf automatically just by virtue of being in the "IN" directory. It also automatically saves these .pdf's in the "OUT" directory with the same file name with .pdf extension. If that's the avenue I should take, how do I get .xls to .ps so I can put the .ps in the "Watch Folder" to automatically make .pdf?
