Ok, I made a brand new user account with Administrator privileges and launched Reader 8.

I noticed that after about 10-15 seconds, an app launched on the dock (Adobe Updater) and then proceeded to download something because there was a percentage number incrementing. Then it asked me for my password to authenticate and then downloaded a couple more things. However, it did not crash.

I switched back to my regular account and Reader 8 crashed as usual when Adobe Updater launched.
