Thanks gene - did reply before but message seems to have been eaten!

Downloaded Windows Install clean up ( which goes against the grain!) and it did remove version 7 which then no longer showed up in my Add/Remove programmes list.

Installation with version 8 then went without a hitch - loud cheers when it went past the previous 'sticking point'.

Thank you ...please Adobe next time you release an update do check it first!
