There are two ways to proceed: either use MWIC directly (I didn't think of it) or manually uninstall v.7. MWIC is a whole lot easier if it works, and so I'd try it first. To do the other, what I did was the following:

a) Tried to install 7.0.8 again, to follow with uninstall, but the over-install didn't work (had to do a google search for 7.0.8).

1) Ran MSConfig and unchecked Adobe in startup (Start > Run)

2) Opened Windows Explorer and deleted everything but my pdf file and one folder in the Adobe directory, and likewise in Docs & Settings. Do searches for Adobe, Acrobat, Reader. That one folder has some dll's that were in use and needed to be deleted directly from the registry

3) Opened the registry (Start > Run > Regedit) and first saved it (Export). Then clicked on HKeyCurrentUser folder and started a find for "Adobe" and deleted everything with v7 or looking very close (don't do if don't have a good sense). Then I went back and searched "Acrobat" and then again for "Reader." Be careful with the latter because there are a lot of other apps using term Reader. That's a lot of finger tiring deletes. Afterwards, check programs to see if 7 is gone and then reboot.

4) At this point I tried to install 8 and it got a 1714 error from previous attempts that hadn't quite cleared. First I did the same searches in Explorer to eliminate some vestiges of 8. Then tried again and failed. At that point Aandi Inston had his suggestion for MWIC, which I had forgotten about but already had installed. Used that and deleted all entries at the top with rectangular symbols. Tried reinstalling 8 again and it worked.

If MWIC works, that would be a lot easier!
