I have experienced the same problem trying to install 8 on my home pc. At work (very fast academic network) it installed without a hitch. But at home I get an embedded ie7 error page that suggests it cannot detect a network connection. Obviously this is nonsense as I have just downloaded the installer (again!) over the network. Switching of the firewall temporarily makes no difference. I had got so tired of the problems with v7 that I gave up on adobe and started using another pdf reader. This experience just convinces me that this was the right idea after all.
