OK, we found a way to get around this that I'm posting here so that others who encounter the same error might be able to install the product:
Proceed to attempt to install Reader 8. When the error dialog shows up DO NOT cancel it.
Instead procede to open the temp folder:
C:\Users\{username}\AppData\LocalLow\Netopsystems\temp\Adobe Reader 8.0
Copy all the contents out of here to a new folder somewhere on your C driver. e.g. C:\adobe
Close the error dialog.
Run the Setup.exe from your copy (C:\adobe\setup.exe).
Acrobat reader will now install.
Delete your copy folder (delete c:\adobe)
Job complete.
Devs - could you maybe look into a full solution for this?
