fdf files in firefox do not launch in Adobe ; display as plain text

Links to .fdf files open properly in IE, but in Firefox the fdf file contents displays as plain text in the browser window. the most recent version of reader is installed, and the .fdf file type is registered in Firefox's internal list of extensions and properly points to Adobe.
