acroread on Linux is a shell-script which performs several tests before starting the actual reader.

One of these is a test for the libgtk version

It only tests for minor versions up to
/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.900.*

libgtk has progressed to at least /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.1000.4

acroread thus loops around this test and never progresses to
starting the actual reader process..

here is a quick fix:
