I had exactly the same problem with my new iMac (Tiger) this week. I sent an email to Adobe support, but haven't heard back yet. I asked my Mac dealer what to do. He told me to quit Safari, then click on the Adobe installer. When asked where to locate the application, choose the Applications folder. I did that, and Adobe Reader installed itself, with an icon showing in the dock. Now I can open it and it's working OK. Hope this helps.
