I have Windows 2000, SP2-4. About a week ago, I discovered I cannot open any .pdf files. I removed the Adobe Reader program from my PC using the Windows Add/Remove programs utility. I downloaded the SP2-4 version for Windows 2000. When I open it, I get an error message. Along the top gray bar it says:

psa30se_ytb612_a708_DLM_en_us.exe-Application Error

The message says:

The instruction at "0x04001bsf" referenced memory at "0x7c99023f". /the memory cound not be "read".
Click OK to terminate thte program
Click CANCEL to bebug the program.

When I click CANCEL, I get the following message:

psa30se_ytb612_.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. And error log is being created.

Can anybody help me with this? This happened about a year ago, and Adobe Customer Support couldn't fix it, and sent me to Technical Support who had me download some kind of special patch which fixed it. Today, they are telling me it's going to cost $40 bucks to fix it.
