can't open pdf files by (double) clicking on icon

In order to open a pdf file, it seems I have to first open the Reader, and open the file within the reader. If I just double-click the file's icon, the FEAD Optimizer opens and tries to perform setup for the reader -- which takes time, and then nothing happens.

Is there some setting for the reader that lets me avoid this problem?

I'm using Adobe Reader 7.0.8, Windows XP.
