I appreciate all of the suggestions people made, but none of them worked. Finally, in desperation, and on the advice of a friend I tried a product called CCleaner (a freebie) which does a lot of things to clean up a Windows computer. First, I uninstalled Adobe Reader. Then I had CCleaner clean the registry where it found over 500 invalid and worthless entries. I then chose the Adobe Reader entry on CCleaner and let it work on that. It found leftover files from several previous releases scattered all about the drive.

I reinstalled the current version of Adobe Reader. With fear and trepidation I clicked on the desktop icon to start AR. It seemed to work. With even greater fear I opened a PDF file. It worked. Finally, using my browser I opened a PDF file from a website. It WORKED!!

Adobe Reader is now is usual reliable and helpful self.
