I have almost the same problem. I open Reader 7.08, no problem, but the second I attempt to access any other function, such as opening a doc, the program freezes. Same thing happens when I open a PDF doc in a browser. It simply freezes!
I installed an SP2 upgrade a couple of days ago, as well as an app called UUSEE Player (for online TV viewing). Maybe it's a compatibility issue, although that sounds weird...Maybe it's just Microsoft screwing up(again)? Prior to these changes I didn't have any problems using Reader.
