Adobe Reader considered hazardous

Hi. I just want to say this somewhere Adobe can theoretically see it, since there's twenty-seven levels of Customer Service barrier to keep me from sending anyone an email.

At the point I've reached, I *dread* opening a PDF because doing so locks up my Web browser or even crashes my machine with incredible frequency. I've started to hate people for packaging their documents as PDFs. I will go through every other link in a Google search before resorting to the PDF link, and wince as I click on it.

This seems to me to be an absolutely incredible state of affairs. Doesn't it seem like adding scads of new features isn't the best thing to spend your time on if your product is so unreliable that people are being conditioned to hate and fear it just by the sheer pain of recovering from its use?

The problem doesn't really lie in how Reader works when it's working; it's how it fails, which is 1) frequently and 2) with no grace whatsoever. One relatively simple thing that would help a lot is if, when rendering inside a web browser and an error resulting in a popup window occurred, said popup window came up *over* the web browser rather than buried behind it, with the browser rendered unresponsive because there's a hidden modal window up.

There's a lot of other important things to be done with Reader, like making it able to handle its input stream going away without exploding and having the rendering engine not completely take away execution from the high level routines that interact with things like Windows and web browser parent processes, but that gets into involved architecture work and so on; the above could be done without taking twenty developers twenty months.

But please, all I really want is to be able to open a PDF without fear of losing all my session state. Can't I please have that? Someday? Soon?
