Searching for words in my PDF is not yielding any results

I tried searching for words I have read in a long (over 200 pages) document. When I saw that I wasn't getting any results I got suspicious so I actually tried searching for words on the page I could see in front of me and even that didn't work. I've followed all the instructions from the help menu (under "Searching for words in a PDF document). It just doesn't seem to be recognizing any words in the document at all. Any ideas of why is this happening and how I can fix it? I operate a mac OS 10.4.8 and adobe reader 7.0.8.
