The latest release of the Adobe Updater has fixes for networking with proxy servers. If you aren't running the latest (because it can't connect), you can manually download and then install the Adobe Updater for Reader & Acrobat 8 from the URLs below.

      Windows: <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4103>
      Mac: <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4104>

There are similar fixes in the latest Adobe Updater for CS4 and Acrobat & Reader 9, downloadable from:

      Windows: <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4231>
      Mac: <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4232>
