Rather than wait six months to a year for a possible fix, I've switched to the free Foxit Reader, which is available at <http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php>. It's very small and, as far as I can tell, just as competent at reading .pdf files as the Adobe Reader.
