Which version of Reader are you on on how did you get there? I assume it is Reader rather than Acrobat (since you mention Acrobat in the post)

Workaround: Generic icons for PDF files after installation

vadim rapp1 - 10:17am May 18, 2006 Pacific

Hello,

this is actually a bug report for Adobe's eyes, in case they look here. I also saw some posts from the users experiencing this issue in this forum.

Symptom: after the installation or especially upgrade to reader 7.0.x, PDF files are displayed not with brand Acrobat icon, but with generic windows icon.

Reason: the installation creates registry key
HKCR\AcroExch.Document.7\DefaultIcon with default value
%windir%\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A70500000002}\PDFFile.ico,0

while the file is in fact created in

%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A70500000002}

Solution: copy folder
%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A70500000002}
to
%windir%\Installer\
