I'm in the middle of a system upgrade and had a lot of variables to juggle when thinking about this problem. I had installed a new 300Gb system disk (SATAII) so I scrutinized it, its jumper settings, and ran Seagate diagnostics on it. Every test passed, and I had not experienced any problems in the week since the drive had been installed. Since the original system disk was intact, I swapped cables and booted it up. I also used an external USB disk as the source of the PDF file. In every case, Adobe Reader provokes the system into lethal or near-lethal page-thrashing. For grins I increased the initial and max sizes of the paging file (3 & 4 Gb) - it seemed to make it somewhat easier to kill the wedged AR - but otherwise had no influence on the problem. Although I would not classify a 12 Mb PDF file as small, I wouldn't consider it "humongous" and would not think it capable of swamping a system such as I am using. Something doesn't add up ...
