Wierd Problem

This is the first time that I have encountered this problem, and its very frustrating. I can open every other .pdf file I can find just fine, but these are causing me problems. A teacher of mine is using .pdf files for our weekly assignments, but many students in the class are having difficulty opening the files that she sends on their computers, including me. I recieve the following error message:

"Acrobat could not open 'filename' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."

I thought it was an easy problem to deal with. I thought wrong. Keep in mind that this message pops up even when saved to my hard drive first, so it isn't an issue with opening it within the browser itself. First off, I have the most up-to-date Adobe reader and Internet Explorer is up-to-date as well, however some of the other student's readers are not up to date, though I haven't inquired as to what versions they use. Some of the students can open the file just fine, one in particular I was talking to uses Firefox.

'Ah ha,' I thought. 'It must be the browser!' So I get Firefox and can open the file just fine. Problem solved... or not. Apparently some of the people I didn't talk to about their browsers use Firefox and still can't open it. I figure it may be because it is the version of Firefox they are running, but here is the showstopper for me. I ran a test. I opened the file in Firefox, saved it to my hard drive, then sent it to one of the people having problems. They could open it just fine! I ran another test - I sent the newly saved file to my teacher and had her foward the unopened file back to me, and another message where she downloaded the file then sent the downloaded file back to me. Both opened just fine for me.

Now I'm just stummped. It can't be the Reader. It can't be the browser. It can't even be the teachers computer or e-mail. The only thing I can think of is that it is her version of Adobe that she uses to create these files, but if that were the case, why are they corrupt in some browsers and not others?
