Ok, I think this error comes up for a variety of reasons, so this is probably only the solution for a subset of the problems encountered. I have a user who had the infamous 'Cannot find or create font...' error message. Reinstalling the software did not fix the problem, and neither did the suggestions contained in the various adobe bulletins. The problem seems to have been some barcode fonts which were installed on the machine. However, even after uninstalling the rogue fonts, the problem did not go away. I had to delete the adobe font list file in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe, (Note that this is a 'hidden' directory) After this, we did a reboot, adobe said something about 'completing an install' - presumably recreating the font list, and the problem disappeared.
