Found the solution on this forum

my attempt at installation failed because of the presence of the original reader was still fecorded on the registry as being on drive d(which crashed) and this presence in the registry would not permit ANYTHING to be done

following info on this forum

"""""1. Download and install the Windows Install Clean Up utility.

a. Visit the Microsoft website at <http://support.microsoft.com> and search for msicuu2.exe. """""""""

I did the following
I downloaded the "msicuu2.exe" file from link at paragraph 4 on this link
 <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909529/en-us>

installed this "msicuu2.exe" program

ran this "msicuu2.exe" program

The "msicuu2.exe" program produced a window with a list of all programs registered on my computer

I CAREFULLY selected ONLY acrobat reader which was on the list(it was no longer on my computer as my drive had crashed)
and
ran the program

got a window with another list BUT with acrobat no longer listed

rebooted the computer

tried installing acrobat reader again

intalled on c drive with NO PROBLEMS

Thank you forum!
