Adobe Reader had no response from 'help->check for update'

Dear all,
   When tried to update the Adobe Reader from 'help' -> 'check for update', for both 8.0 and 9.0, the Adobe Reader neither had response nor pop box to notify for updating.
   The OS is traditional chinese window xp home with sp3 and update. We tried all 8.0/8.1.3, 9.0/9.1 and chinese and english version of Adobe Reader. Moreover, we tried to uninstall/install/MS MSI Clean Up Utility with no help.

Anyone had idea on this?
