Downloading PDF files to be read off-line

Hello,
I have a website, and would like some PDF files that I have created to be downloaded by any visitors choosing to do so. The problem is that when the link for the PDF file is clicked, it opens in the web browser. I am not sure if it is still actually on the website or not, but would prefer the PDF files to be downloaded and read by the reader off-line (or not on my website). My concern is bandwidth, and would not want the site to be suspended reguarly if there is too much traffic (wishful thinking I know, lol).

Could anyone please tell me how this can be set up? I see it set up correctly time and again on different websites, but alas, my hosting company says it is down to the visitor's settings on their computer, and cannot be altered. This does not make sense, because I can download PDF files from their website without it opening in my web browser, which would mean I would still be on their website. Ideally, I am looking for the little grey box to appear when the link is clicked upon, prompting the viewer to save or open.

Having said all of that, you may say that when the PDF file is opened in the web browser, that it is not actually on my website, then this would be great.

Trying to get my mind around it, so any help anyone can give would be extremely appreciated.

Cheers,

S Meakin (Steve).
