Adobe 7.0.8 Won't Download

I've been having trouble getting .pdf files to load recently so I thought I would install the update. Reader wouldn't open automatically or from my desktop. Every time I tried to download the update, it would get hung up partway through and tell me there was a version of Reader open that needed to be closed. Since I had no Reader open, I couldn't go any further and had to abort. Then, I uninstalled every version of Adobe Reader I could find on my system and tried to re-download. Same thing happened. As far as I can tell, there's nothing Adobe on my system. Yet, I still can't download because it thinks there is. Suggestions?
