I was having all the same problems. Tried to fix it for 2 weeks. During that time, I couldn't open any pdf files. I had "patch" problems and I couldn't delete the "acroIEHelper.dll" file just like some other people in this forum. I couldn't completely uninstall or re-install Adobe Reader 7.0.8. I was totally disgusted with Adobe. So I got rid of all that I could and then downloaded the Foxit Software per your example. It asks you whether you want Foxit to be the default pdf reader. I said yes. Now I can read pdf files again. If anyone figures out how to find and get rid of the Adobe fragments remaining on my computer, please let me know. Also, my computer doesn't freeze on shut down as it did with Adobe as my default pdf reader. Problem solved!
