"Invalid Annotation Object" error message, file won't save, etc

I have searched under the terms invalid annotation object, and pieces thereof, and have not found any topics that relate. I'm using Acrobat 5 on one machine, and Acrobat 7 on another. (This process is something that is required, unfortunately.) Over time, the document will no longer save, save as, or allow any work within it (in either version) - on one page I get this invalid annotation object message and the page has become blank. This happened after I consolidated a number of documents into one 300 page doc. The error message does NOT appear in the original un-inserted document, which was not changed in any way before it was consolidated.

I have tried deleting the pages and reinserting the ones that I know have no problems, but Acrobat closes. I've tried deleting the pages and saving, in the hope that that would help but it still won't let me save or save as.

This particular document is now toast, but I'd like to understand why this happened so I can avoid it in the future.

Any help would be appreciated.
