Help- Reader Locks Up- And Can't Delete Reader

Adobe Reader 7.0.5

My wife has been trying to download documents from her worksite. When she clicks on the link, the Adobe Reader opens but nothing happens. I tried to upgrade to 7.0.8 but I get a popup that says: "Patch could not be opened. Verify that the patch exists an that you can access it or contact application vendor."

I don't now what to look for for the patch.. so, I decided to delete Reader and start afresh. However, I get the same message as above. It appears I can not use it or delete it.

In the program files, I have v6.0 and v7.0 and other misc files in the Adobe folder. These are
AdbeRdr60-enu-full
{AC76BA86-0000-0000-7AC5-6028747ADE00)
and a couple of Photoshop folders.
