Detecting if Adobe Reader installed from within IE

Does anyone know if its possible to detect whether Adobe Reader is installed from within IE ? Basically I'd like to code up a test (either in JavaScript or some other method) which runs within the users browser and detects what version of Adobe Reader they have. This test could then be used to tell them whether they need to download the Reader.

I realise this may not be possible from within the browser sandbox, but IE must be able to do some basic checks when users try to launch pdf files.

Thanks,
Paul.
