We have had so many problems with Adobe Reader 7 in our Citrix environment (with thin clients for most of the users) and on a couple of workstations we have here that we finally dumped it in favor of Foxit Reader, which is now working well for us.

The problem you describe was also occurring here randomly with no apparent pattern. When it happened, we checked the user's default printer in any other program, and they both had access to their default printer and could print to it, except in Adobe. The funny thing was that Adobe could see the default printer in printer setup, but would give us that same error you're getting if the user then tried to print from Adobe.

The usual workaround for the issue for us was closing Adobe, then reopening it. That worked most of the time; however in some cases, we'd have to log the user completely out of the system, then re-log in. Occassionally, the problem would persist even then.

It was random, all our users got it at some point, and we never figured out the final fix.

I'm afraid Adobe has "improved" reader to the point that it's just too bloated to do it's basic tasks reliably any longer.
