now get a warning (Adobe Acrobat 6.0 has encountered a problem and needs
to close) every time I try to open a pdf on the web.
This is one of the drawbacks of having incompatible versions installed at the same time. You'll need to make sure Acrobat isn't running before viewing a PDF in the browser, or launch reader first, then browse.
As it is now Reader appears to be the default viewer, that's why Acrobat 6 crashes (because the browser plug-in can't load properly)
