Downloaded 7.0.8 looks like it installed properly but will not open or run

I downloaded the adobe reader 7.0.8 Downloaded fine, installed, my computer says it is there, but when I double click on the desktop icon it doesn't do anything. I then tried to left click and 'open' still nothing. I have the system requirements. I had reader when I was running 98.2 but then I wiped the drive and installed Win Pro XP. Just can't get it to run. Uninstalled and retried several times. Also tried from a disk. Any suggestions.
