I don't know what's wrong with your installation of Adobe Reader 9; I have a much less sophisticated computer, and AR9 works just fine.

What you could try is uninstall Reader 9, then download and install 8.1.3 from <http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.1.3/enu/AdbeRdr813_en_US.exe>
