Adobe Reader 9 after download problem.

I have downloaded reader 9 numerous times but each time I am unable to open it or any of my other progames, on cliking to open I get the following message: "This file does not have a programe associated with it. For performing this action create an association in the set associations control panel" I am running windows Ultimate.
I have never had any problem in the past with previous versions I did try version 8 but this was the same, can anyone help, I have a very basic knowledge. Ken
