Adobe Reader can not open .doc via email attachment

I am receiving an email with several attachments from their MS word program in the way of .doc, along with some PDF attachments. I can open the PDF attachments, however I cannot open the .doc attachments. I have Adobe Reader 8. A box comes up and states..."adobe reader could not open ____.doc because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)". Is there something I need to do so I can retrieve these documents? (I have a toshiba laptop with windows vista home premium version, AMD Turion 64x2 dual-core technology TL-56, 2048mb, DDR2,SDRAM, 160GB) thanx, Pam
