Try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility ( <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/> ).

Note that this will not get rid of Reader 8.1, but will allow you to install 9.0

To get rid of 8.x
* run the Windows Installer Cleanup tool (remove Adobe Reader 8.x)
* reinstall Adobe Reader 8.x
* uninstall Adobe Reader 8.x (optional)
* install Adobe Reader 9.0
