I had a similar issue on our domain distribution of Adobe Reader 9.0. The problem I experienced was resolved by using the .MSI installer rather than the .exe. My install script looks like this:

msiexec /quiet /norestart /l*vx "%WINDIR%\TEMP\AcroRead.log" /i AcroRead.msi TRANSFORMS=AcroRead.mst
