Thanks for sharing your experience, Janet. I then uninstalled both IE7 and IE6 (I discovered that installing IE7 left IE6 on your computer and it needed to be uninstalled via Add/Remove/Windows Components) and also uninstalled Adobe 8. I then installed Adobe Reader 6.0. It worked just fine! 8-) Then I installed IE6 and the Reader worked fine. I then installed Reader 7.0.5 and it wouldn't open. (I didn't realize it back then when I first installed V 7.x, but apparently Reader 7.X is a really bloated version - it took many times longer to install and uninstall than V6.) So I then uninstalled V 7.x and again installed V 6.X. It works fine. I then reinstalled IE 7 and Reader 6.X still works. So I will stay there. (I do use FoxIt a lot still and will continue to do so, but some online accounts - like banks - insist on using on Adobe Reader.) Thanks again. Adobe has their work cut out for it. I suspect something in the Windows system updates has caused the problem, but don't know what. As I said in an earlier post, Reader 8.0 works fine in Safe mode but won't work in any other mode - even in regular bootup with all other programs stopped. So it has to be a Windows conflict, not a conflict with other non-Windows program.
