If you had a previous version of Reader on your machine, that is part of the problem, so it seems. The first thing to ry is a complete "uninstall" of ALL things Adobe Reader (v5-8) using Add/Remove Programs. Download a fresh copy of Reader 8 to a folder that you create (mine is Temp) and run the installer from there.
This computer has Firefox 2.0.0.1 as well as IE7 (almost never use it :)) and I have no issues with Reader 8. Then again I did more than use Add/Remove. I went so far as to manually delete everything I could find as to folders and Registry entries-works. This last idea can be very scary if not downright dangerous-you do it at your own risk!
For more ideas and help-please search. MarkATS, Grafiti and I have written on this problem. Good Luck
