Not quite sure why you are not installing Reader 8 instead of updating Reader 7. It sounds like you may want to NOT use the automatic updater feature and just go to adobe.com and download the update manually. You might try going to add/remove programs and see if the Adobe Download Manager is listed and delete it. Otherwise do a search on your computer for Adobe Download Manager and delete what it finds. Also curious what you are using for a browser
