A solution was reached after following the following instructions in this tech note from Adobe.
 <http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=328233>
After following this completely, Firefox continued to have the same problem, until, I went to an Adobe web site page and opened a PDF on it. At that point I was given three choices. Open with (and choose the application "Acrobat 8"), Download & Save, or cancel. There is also a check box to follow your choice every time. After making the choice to open with Acrobat 8, Firefox performed as normal opening PDF's in separate windows!
