Thanks, Mike. I have tried the remedies in this note, except the ones recommending tinkering with the registry. No luck, so I am back on the 7.0.9 version which installs and works fine.
I have however reproduced the problem I have with my computer. The key that refuses to write to software\classes\.pdf\PersistentHandler is the following:
{F6594A6D-D57F-4EFD-B2C3-DCD9779E382E}
Any clues?
The intriguing thing is that Adobe Reader 8 has installed on my other laptop, a 2-year-old Dell, perfectly.
