On further investigation, I have narrowed the problem down as follows: Adobe Reader 8 in IE6 (and probably IE7) does not work with a cfdocument PDF on a remote server (same PC is OK) if: Edit>Preferences>Internet>Display PDF in browser is checked. When I uncheck this box, I can see my PDF in Reader 8.
