Selecting Text (more is better, right?)

I have Adobe 7 (came preinstalled on my computer). However I find that options for selecting text within a document have become a bit limited since Adobe 5.

I have a computer with Adobe 5 installed and it is possible to select text by just dragging an outline around the text you want to read. Now in Adobe 6,7 this feature has been removed (under the newer is better ethos) and replaced with a "drag the cursor around the text you want" button.

Now, this in my view is a big step backwards it is no longer possible for the user to select a column of text in a multiple column document (but, hey why would I want one column when I can have 2,3,..., more is better, right? WRONG.)
