This is a totally unacceptable solution, especially since Adobe is promoting the installation of Reader 8 on its downloads page. Most users do not have this level of sophistication in handling their machines and may not even realise that Reader 8 is the problem when they get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message when they try to display a PDF in an appplication. What is Adobe doing to mitigate this situation?
