Unable to use Adobe Reader 8

Every time I attempt to use adobe reader, I get the following message 
from Microsoft:
"Adobe Reader 8.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We 
are sorry for the inconvenience."
I removed all prior versions of Adobe before downloading v. 8.   I 
also removed IE7 from my computer and am back to IE6, SP2.
I cannot read any pdf files now.
Suggestions?  Thanks.
