Anything is possible. However, you need to remove the prior download from your machine. Can we assume that you are using Windows XP w/SP-2? Also, do you have an older version of Reader 7.0.8 or earlier? If YES to both questions, I will suggest that you follow the suggested removal methods offered in other threads here. Definitely run Microsoft's Cleanup utility after you use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then check your program folder and Delete all of the folders related to Adobe Reader. Finally, take a look in the Registry and see if there are any Adobe specific references there.
WARNING-Editing the Registry can be Dangerous! Do this at your own risk!
You should have no references anywhere on the machine for Reader. They simply need deleted using Regedit or a commercial program and maybe the FREE Crap Cleaner utility.
Now you can proceed to download Reader 8. Make sure that you uncheck the Photoshop offering. The file should be ~20.8 megs and is to be saved to a Temp or Download folder for installation. You can then click on the file and install. Good luck
